A Legacy of 30 Years
The Mall at Echelon has been a cornerstone of Hillside and South Jersey since our opening day on October 1, 1970. Built on the site of the old Echelon Airport, this bi-level mall was developed by The Rouse Company on Somerdale Road, Hillside.
We’ve been proud to serve this community for over three decades — from grand openings to holiday celebrations to everyday shopping trips that become lifelong memories.
Oct 1, 1970 — Grand Opening! 88 stores open to a crowd of over 500. 2,000 balloons released from the open court.
1978 — Gimbels opens as a new anchor store, joining Strawbridge & Clothier and Lit Brothers.
Nov 21, 1985 — The Food Court at Echelon opens with 17 new dining options.
1990 — 20th Anniversary. Mall hosts the Hillside 4th of July Celebration.
1994 — Macy's opens, replacing Gimbels. JCPenney and Sears complete major renovations.
2001 — Website launches! ★

Hello everyone!! First of all, thank you all for the kind words about my uncle. He was nuts! I just want to say the mall is OPEN and VERY SAFE and there is so much to do here. Please come visit us. Bring your whole family. We have many stores still open and the food court is wonderful. There is no reason not to come. I promise you will have a great time. Please come soon. Great to see Echelon finally has a website! The parking by Macy's is always crazy on weekends though. Maybe do something about that lol
